WHY YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIMELINE MATTERS
Your wedding day moves quickly—sometimes beautifully slow, sometimes incredibly fast—and the structure of your photography timeline plays a major role in how smoothly everything unfolds. A thoughtful timeline doesn’t just determine when photos happen; it creates space for emotion, connection, and moments that feel unhurried and intentional. After photographing weddings for more than a decade, I’ve learned that the most extraordinary images come from days where the schedule supports the natural rhythm of the celebration.
The timeline you choose shapes the feel of your day. It influences how relaxed you’ll be, how much time we have for portraits, how the lighting will look in your photos, and how present you’ll feel in each moment. My goal is always to create a timeline that honors the energy of your wedding while making room for both the big, cinematic scenes and the quiet details that tell your story.
THE MORNING: GETTING READY WITH INTENTION
One of the most meaningful parts of the day begins long before the ceremony. The getting-ready hours are filled with soft excitement, small emotional exchanges, and details that reflect your style and personality. I typically recommend allowing two hours for this portion of the day. This gives plenty of time for photographing the details you’ve thoughtfully chosen — the dress, the rings, accessories, invitations, florals — and for capturing candid moments with your wedding party.
A spacious room with beautiful natural light makes a world of difference. Large windows, clean décor, and neutral tones allow for soft, flattering portraits and a calm atmosphere. I often document the energy of the room — the laughter, the anticipation, the champagne toasts, the finishing touches — all of which weave into the narrative of your day. These moments set the emotional tone for the hours ahead.
THE FIRST LOOK: CREATING A PRIVATE, EMOTIONAL MOMENT
Whether or not to do a first look is entirely up to you, but from a photography perspective, it offers a beautiful opportunity for connection and extra portrait time. When couples choose to see one another before the ceremony, the moment becomes private, heartfelt, and authentic. You can take a deep breath together, slow down, and let the emotions settle gently before the rest of the day begins.
A first look also opens the timeline, allowing us to capture many of your couple portraits and wedding party photos earlier in the day. This creates more breathing room later on, giving you more time to enjoy cocktail hour or spend time with guests without feeling rushed. Typically, a first look and the portraits that follow take about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your chosen location. I always choose spots with flattering light and meaningful or visually striking backdrops so the moment feels personal and cinematic.
PORTRAITS: WHERE YOUR STORY TAKES SHAPE
Your couple portraits are where your wedding day becomes a work of art. Whether we photograph in a quiet garden, against the architectural beauty of Chicago’s landmarks, or in the soft glow of your venue’s interiors, this is the time to create images that feel timeless, emotional, and deeply reflective of who you are.

I approach portraits with a balance of light direction and authenticity. I want you to feel comfortable, connected, and completely yourselves. This isn’t about stiff posing — it’s about movement, subtle moments, and the natural chemistry between you. Portrait sessions typically last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on travel time and how many locations you love. When the timeline allows, I like to incorporate a mix of editorial-style moments and candid interactions to build a gallery full of variety and depth.
THE CEREMONY: COMPLETELY IN THE MOMENT
The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day — the moment that brings together family, friends, emotion, and meaning. My role here is to document every expression, every tear, every laugh, and every small interaction that helps tell the story of your commitment. Whether you’re exchanging vows in a cathedral, beneath the open sky, or inside a warm candlelit room, I work quietly and intentionally to capture the ceremony as it naturally unfolds.
Lighting plays a significant role in the look of your ceremony images. Evening ceremonies offer romantic ambiance and glowing skin tones, while daytime ceremonies bring bright, airy consistency. Regardless of the setting, I adjust my approach to complement the environment, ensuring that the emotion and architecture of the space feel beautifully represented.
SUNSET PORTRAITS: THE MAGIC MOMENTS YOU’LL TREASURE MOST

If there is one time of day I always encourage couples to set aside, it’s golden hour. The light just before sunset creates a soft, warm glow that is incredibly flattering and atmospheric. Even ten to fifteen minutes during this window can produce some of the most stunning and memorable images of your entire gallery.
These portraits feel different — calmer, deeper, more romantic. The day has unfolded, the nerves have eased, and you’re fully present in the moment. Whether we step outside your venue, find a nearby scenic spot, or simply use a quiet outdoor corner, golden hour brings a natural cinematic quality to your photos that is impossible to replicate at any other time of day.
THE RECEPTION: STORYTELLING THROUGH CELEBRATION
Once the party begins, the photography shifts into full storytelling mode. This is where candid moments shine — the hugs from family members, hilarious speeches, joyful tears, the energy on the dance floor, and the small details you’ve spent months planning. I love capturing the reception before guests enter, while everything is still untouched: the place settings, candlelight, floral arrangements, and atmosphere that reflect your vision.
As the night continues, I weave between documenting genuine interactions and finding artistic compositions that elevate the story. Whether your reception is full of lively dancing or intimate conversations, my goal is to capture the emotion exactly as it unfolds. These images become some of the most cherished because they represent pure joy, celebration, and connection.
YOUR TIMELINE SHOULD SUPPORT THE STORY YOU WANT TO TELL
A well-planned photography timeline isn’t about rigid structure—it’s about creating the space for your day to flow beautifully and authentically. When built thoughtfully, your timeline allows you to feel present in every moment while still giving us the opportunity to create stunning, meaningful imagery.
Every couple’s day is unique, which is why I work closely with you to tailor a timeline that reflects your priorities, your style, and your emotional rhythm. Whether your wedding is urban and modern, romantic and moody, or intimate and elegant, the right timeline ensures that your gallery feels cohesive, intentional, and truly you.
